About the project

Our plans for East Park Energy involve the construction of a solar farm that could generate up-to 400 megawatts of electricity, along with a battery storage facility.

In 2023, we presented our initial plans at a non-statutory public consultation. We are currently developing our plans further, taking into consideration all feedback received, and intend to hold a detailed statutory consultation in the autumn of this year. In the meantime, you can read more about our initial proposals on this page.

Our proposals for East Park Energy involve the installation of new solar panels across four sites to the northwest of St Neots, connecting into the existing National Grid substation at Eaton Socon. We expect that the project would be capable of generating up to 400 megawatts of clean energy, which is enough electricity to power approximately 108,000 homes – more than the total number in Bedford.

Alongside the new solar panels, we are also proposing to build a battery storage facility. This would allow for more efficient use of the solar panels, as electricity can be stored at times of low demand and released onto the electricity network when it is most needed. Battery storage technology will also help to provide grid stability services to National Grid, as we will be able to export a consistent amount of power onto the network at all times, even at night when the solar panels are not generating electricity.

Between the different solar sites, the battery storage facility and the substation at Eaton Socon, we will need to build additional infrastructure, such as access tracks and underground cables. Our plans also include a suite of environmental mitigation and biodiversity enhancement measures, which will provide a huge boost to local wildlife and ensure that we deliver biodiversity net gain well beyond the Government’s minimum requirements.

East Park Energy is split across several sites to the northwest of St Neots, straddling the administrative boundaries of Bedford and Huntingdonshire:

  • Site A comprises fields located to the north, west and east side of a small hill that lies between Pertenhall and Riseley
  • Site B comprises fields located north of an elevated ridgeline which runs between Keysoe and Little Staughton
  • Site C comprises fields south of Great Staughton and the River Kym
  • Site D comprises fields between Great Staughton and Hail Weston.
